More options than most people realise.
Things worth weighing include how long a method lasts, whether you need to remember it, what it does to your periods, how quickly fertility returns, and how it fits with your health. Long-acting options such as the implant and intrauterine devices are among the most effective because there is nothing to remember.
Other options include the pill, the vaginal ring, the injection and condoms. Your GP will talk through the benefits and risks of each so you can decide.

- Tests, treatment or referral if needed

Need emergency contraception? It works better the sooner it is taken, and is available from a pharmacy without a prescription.
Which is most effective?
Long-acting reversible methods, the implant and intrauterine devices, because they remove the chance of a missed dose.
Does contraception affect fertility later?
For most methods, fertility returns promptly after stopping. With the injection it can take longer.
A small procedure, close to home.
The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod placed under the skin of the upper arm, using local anaesthetic. It lasts for three years and can be removed at any time.
Insertion and removal are available at Aberdeen Surgery. Some bleeding changes are common, so your GP will talk through what to expect before you decide.

- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
Does it hurt?
Local anaesthetic is used, so most people feel only a brief sting from the injection.
Is there a cost?
The consultation is bulk billed for eligible patients. The device and consumables can attract a cost, and reception will tell you first.
Getting ready for pregnancy.
Start folate at least a month before trying, check your vaccines, review your medicines and catch up on cervical screening if it is due. Your GP can check your general health and answer your questions.
If you have been trying for 12 months, or six months if you are over 35, it is worth looking into fertility. Investigation involves both partners.
- Book a preconception visit
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
Should my partner come too?
It can help. Fertility involves both partners, and your partner's health matters too.
What tests are done?
Your GP may suggest blood tests and other checks depending on your history.
Whatever you decide.
If you are pregnant and unsure what to do, your GP can confirm the pregnancy and talk through all of your options in confidence, without judgement, and refer you to the support you choose.
It is your decision. You can bring someone with you, or come on your own.
- Book a confidential appointment
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed

Will anyone else be told?
No. Your consultation is confidential.
How soon should I book?
As soon as you can, so that all options remain open.
If your family is complete.
Vasectomy and tubal ligation are permanent methods of contraception. Your GP can talk through what is involved and refer you to a specialist.
Because they are designed to be permanent, it is worth taking time to be sure.
- Book to discuss options
- Talk it through with your GP
- Tests, treatment or referral if needed
- Follow-up and review
Do you perform vasectomies here?
No. Your GP can refer you to a specialist who does.
Can it be reversed?
Reversal is not always possible, so these methods are considered permanent.
