Know where you stand.

Sexually transmissible infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV are common and often have no symptoms. Testing is usually a urine test, a swab you can often take yourself, or a blood test.

If a test is positive, your GP will explain the treatment and how to let partners know, which can often be done anonymously.

  1. Book an STI test
  2. Talk it through with your GP
  3. Tests, treatment or referral if needed
  4. Follow-up and review

How often should I be tested?

It depends on your situation. Many people test with each new partner, or at least once a year if sexually active. Your GP can suggest what suits you.

Do I have to have an examination?

Not always. Many tests can be done with a urine sample or self-collected swab.
