Good to know before you book.

  • Bring the whole list

Most men come in for one thing and mention the important one at the door. Tell reception if there is more than one concern so we book enough time.

One longer appointment beats three rushed ones. Tell reception what you want to cover.

  • Busy week? Try telehealth

Phone or video appointments work well for many follow-ups and results, so you do not need to take a full day off.

Telehealth suits results, follow-ups and many everyday concerns.

Choose a topic to see what is involved, the questions men ask most, and how to book.

Know your numbers.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death for Australian men, and many of the risk factors, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, have no symptoms until something goes wrong.

A heart health check looks at your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, lifestyle and family history together, to estimate your risk and agree on what is worth doing about it. Medicare funds a heart health check from age 45, or from 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  1. Book a heart health check
  2. Talk it through with your GP
  3. Tests, treatment or referral if needed
  4. Follow-up and review

Chest pain is never one to wait on. Pain, pressure or tightness in the chest, especially with sweating, breathlessness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw: call 000.

How often should I check my blood pressure?

Your GP can suggest how often based on your readings and risk. Many people check every year or two, and more often if it has been high.

What happens at a heart health check?

A longer appointment that covers your history, blood pressure, a blood test for cholesterol and sugar, and a plan based on your overall risk.

Is it bulk billed?

GP consultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card. Some blood tests can carry a cost depending on the pathology provider.
