Joined-up care.
To claim a Medicare rebate for most specialist visits, you need a referral from your GP. Your GP will assess you first, may arrange tests, and then write a referral with the information the specialist needs.
After your specialist visit, their letter comes back to your GP so your care stays joined up.

Know before you go.
Specialists set their own fees, and some charge more than the Medicare rebate. Ask the specialist's rooms about fees and waiting times when you book.
